Top Line Thoughts: I am all for the return of the romcom, but this movie did not do it for me. Romcoms don’t need to be good movies. They don’t need to have important or meaningful plots or great acting or do anything novel or amazing. But they do need to have chemistry between the main characters. That is the whole point of the romcom: the romance (or at least half the point). So to have a romcom where the leads aren’t even together (not together as a couple, together as in physically in the same place or even interacting) for basically the entire movie just seems like a weird conceit. There is no chance for us to seem them developing a connection. No tiny sparks or small moments like a brush of the hands or meaningful eye contact. Nothing that ramps up to a proclamation of love at the end. The movie wasn’t terrible or painful to watch but it didn’t work for me as a romcom, despite the likeability of the leads.
