Theater Camp

My review, like this movie, will be short and sweet! We could use more hour and a half, lighthearted comedies. This movie was cute and sweet, the little kids were adorable and talented, but was also very funny. I’m sure the jokes do hit a little harder if you are familiar with the world of theater, but there are also characters who are outsiders, which plays into the humor as well, observing the absurdity of it.

The main adult cast who are also the writers, creators, and directors of the movie, are real life friends and particularly Molly Gordon and Ben Platt have been friends who have performed together since childhood. It was really charming to see home video of the two as children on stage and then see them doing the real thing as adults. They were these kids and they actually did make it. I also just love Molly Gordon in everything she does and, between this and The Bear, she’s having a great year. Theater Camp is a well-done movie that nails a very specific sense of humor perfectly (Molly Gordon’s music teacher character’s name being Rebecca-Diane may be my favorite detail from the film). A funny, easy watch I would recommend!
