SmartLess: On the Road (TV)

This is another short and sweet review where really all I have to say is that I recommend this show. Mostly, I recommend listening to the Smartless podcast because it doesn’t just put a smile on my face, it causes me to actively burst out laughing when I’m listening in public and embarrass myself. But seriously, this has been one of my favorite podcasts for a while now and I do (and have) recommend it to everyone.

If you’re a listener of the podcast, I’m sure this show will mean a lot more to you as you get a closer look at something you already have familiarity with. But even if you’re not into podcasts, the show is still funny and entertaining. I could listen to Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes talk about absolutely anything for hours and hours and that’s pretty much exactly what this show is. About half of it is footage from the live shows of their 2022 tour and the other half is everything that happened while they were not on stage.

Personally, I found their discussions about figuring out how the show would work and making adjustments in real time to be interesting as a real peek behind the curtain. But mostly, what makes the podcast and this series great is seeing the three men chat and banter. A shockingly large portion of their conversations seem to revolve around food and Jason Bateman’s anxieties and borderline eating disorder. The rest of their discussions cover topics from fashion, to fatherhood, to all of their unique upbringings and related trauma, to anything else on the spectrum between mundane and significant. They are rarely serious and frequently bashing each other. But making fun of each other is their love language, which I can personally relate to, and helps to make much of the show feel like you’re there with them, just hanging out with friends.

2023 Count: 10 seasons, 29 movies, 1 special
