I know I’m really behind on this but, I have to be honest, it took me a little bit to get back into this show (and I think you’ll see it ended up coming to me at the right time). I loved the first season and was excited for the second, but it just didn’t grab me off the bat. The show often tells little side stories that aren’t directly related to the progression of the team throughout the season and sometimes I love them and sometimes it takes me out of the show a little bit. I think, to start the season, some of these excursions from the main plot took away from the intensity and urgency of the central goal for me. Even though the stories were interesting and entertaining, I felt disconnected from the team and the primary story.
However, I powered through and, after a few episodes, I was right back in it. Full force. Crying every episode. Feeling like I would kill or die for every single person featured. I’m completely invested and I love them all. I genuinely sobbed through the whole second half of the season. As we all know, I’m a crier and cry at everything, but besides how incredible and inspiring so many of these people and their stories are, I relate to them on a personal level. I know how it feels to care with your whole heart, spirit, and being about a sports team. As I sit here writing this, Michigan is 2 days away from playing in the College Football Playoff National Championship game. I don’t think a normal person could understand how much that means to me. But I’m sure a Wrexham fan would. When I watch these people bite their nails in stress and agony during a match, feel their souls shatter after a tough defeat, and cry tears of joy when the team gets an important win, I’m right there with them. I feel it through the screen in the moment and I have felt all of those things in the past.
In many ways, this show illustrates the power of sports. For people who don’t get it, it seems like “just a game”. But it’s not about the game. It’s about the people. The community. Welcome to Wrexham highlights the community that is that town. The community of Michigan fans is a huge part of the reason I love it so much (and why most people hate us… we get it, you’re jealous ;)). It’s about being a part of something. A collective. A movement. A moment. The shared history and passion brings people together. A win isn’t just for the players and the coaches. It’s for all of us.
Everyone in the Wrexham community needed a win. For whatever reason in their lives. That’s why these side stories are actually so important. So we can see who we are really rooting for. So we can see why it all matters. So we can see that victory doesn’t just mean something to the team. It lets every fan feel like a winner, like they accomplished something, like even if all else in the world seems terrible, they will always have this moment to be on top.
Okay sports sermon over (probably). I love this show and I loved this season. The new theme song is perfect and made me want to cry every time I heard it. So many of the new “characters” and storylines this season were fascinating and moving, but I have to say my favorite one was the look at the Wrexham women’s team. To be as talented and dedicated as they are, they deserved to share some of the spotlight. It’s also just insane to me that many of them have day jobs like working in prisons and restaurants while they play for the team as almost a hobby. It’s both impressive as well as glaringly indicative of the gender disparity. This is just a really powerful, emotional, feel-good show that I think everyone should watch. Especially if you’re a sports fan. It just means more. And with that, GO BLUE!

Go Blue!!! Understanding a michigan fan is a very apt analogy for understanding a Wrexham fan. I write this one day before the national championship game from my plane seat before taking off on flight to Houston.
